For questions regarding undergraduate enrollment into Physics and Astronomy courses, please contact the Undergraduate Advisors: Mary Tran mtran@physics.ucla.edu and Joy Luo jluo@physics.ucla.edu.
If you are interested in enrolling into a course that is full, please first check to see if there is a waitlist available. If yes, please add yourself to the waitlist. Our waitlists are realistic and are monitored on a regular basis, and as space becomes available the waitlists will be automatically enrolled. If you are on the waitlist, you should still attend lecture and discussion so you are caught up with the material in the event you are able to enroll.
If the course and waitlist are both full, please do not contact the course instructor to request a PTE number. The Physics & Astronomy department does not administer PTE numbers for lower division courses. Please fill out the quarterly Enrollment Tracking Form. This form acts as a way to track the number of students who are requesting enrollment into a Physics & Astronomy course that is full. Filling out this form by no means guarantees enrollment into a course. This is only for enrollment tracking purposes and to disseminate updates regarding course availability should there be any.
Enrollment into the Physics 1 Honors series (1AH, 1BH, 1CH) requires departmental consent. Please do not contact the course instructor to request a PTE number. Instead, contact the Undergraduate Advisors: Mary Tran mtran@physics.ucla.edu and Joy Luo jluo@physics.ucla.edu to request a PTE number. Before reaching out to Mary and Joy, please first check the course prerequisites and corequisites to make sure you have met all requisites.
| Physics 1 Honors Series | Prerequisites | Corequisite |
|---|---|---|
| 1AH | Math 31A, 31B | Math 32A |
| 1BH | Math 31B, 32A, Physics 1AH or 1A | Math 32B |
| 1CH | Math 32A, 32B, Physics 1AH or 1A, 1BH or 1B | Math 33A |

The Physics & Astronomy department does not administer PTE numbers for lower division courses. Please do not ask the instructor for a PTE number, they will not be able to provide you with one. Additionally, due to the three-part structure of the course (lecture, discussion, lab), we are unable to use the waitlist function on MyUCLA, hence the reason why a waitlist option is not available.

I have a schedule conflict with my Physics 5 series course, can I switch to a different lecture, discussion, or lab?
Students who are currently enrolled in a Physics 5 series course and are looking to switch their lecture, discussion, or lab sections, will need to find another student to switch sections with if the section they wish to enroll into is full. To help facilitate this, students are encouraged to post in the quarterly 5 series Section Switch Marketplace spreadsheets. These spreadsheets will be shared with enrolled students a few weeks prior to the start of the quarter. For any questions regarding section switches, please contact Joy Luo jluo@physics.ucla.edu.
Spring 2026 Physics 5A Section Switch Marketplace
Spring 2026 Physics 5B Section Switch Marketplace
Spring 2026 Physics 5C Section Switch Marketplace
Please note that after the Add course deadline has passed (Friday of Week 3 during the academic year), section switches will need to be done via Enrollment Petition.
I am retaking a Physics 5 series course and have already completed the lab portion in a previous quarter, can I re-use my previous lab score?
Students who are repeating a course in the 5 series and have already completed the labs in a previous quarter can choose to reuse their lab previous lab score towards their retake so they do not have to repeat the lab portion. Students who would like to do this should email Mary Tran mtran@physics.ucla.edu with their UID and the quarter they last took the Physics 5 series course to have their final lab score identified. Students who choose to reuse their previous lab score will be switched to Lab G99 (special lab section for students repeating the class and already have lab credit). Note that Lab G99 does not actually meet and serves as an enrollment placeholder.
Please note only students have completed all of the labs are eligible to reuse their lab score. If a student has completed some but not all of the labs, they will not be eligible to reuse their lab scores and will need to enroll in a regular 5 series lab section to complete all labs again.
Enrollment for upper division Physics and Astronomy labs (Astr 180, Physics 170, 180) are done via PTE numbers only. If you are interested in enrolling in a lab course, please fill out the quarterly Lab Interest Form. Please note that filling out this form does not guarantee that you will receive a PTE number. Undergraduates who have declared a physics/astrophysics/biophysics major are given first priority during PTE assignment. All PTE numbers are given based on class standing and expected date of graduation
The Spring 2026 Lab Interest Form closes on February 3, 2026.
If the deadline to submit the Lab Interest Form has already passed and the form is now closed, please email Mary Tran mtran@physics.ucla.edu with the following information:
Lab PTEs will be sent out during second pass enrollment so please prioritize other courses in your first pass.
