Talk Title: "Polar Molecules and Parity Violation"

Abstract:

Heavy polar molecules provide an ideal setting for studying the very subtle effects of parity violation.  Relativistic interactions of an electron with the heavy nucleus provide scope for the necessary weak interactions, and huge internal fields (~GV/cm) have enabled extremely sensitive studies of the predicted electric dipole moment of the electron.  High precision microwave spectroscopy studies of the hyperfine structure resulting from nuclear quadrupole moments can provide an essential calibration for calculations of these fields.  Results will be shown for YbF and PbF as well as simpler alkali halides such as RbF and RbCl.
