"Optical absorption inside the Mott gap" by Professor Patrick Lee (MIT)

I consider the possibility of optical absorption inside the standard optical gap in a Mott insulator in the zero temperature limit. I compare the cases of the Neel ordered antiferromagnetic ground state with the quantum spin liquid state and find that the latter gives rise to a much larger contribution. I shall discuss some recent data from Nuh Gedik's group which found  absorption at Terahertz frequency with the unusual property that the absorption increases with decreasing temperature.
