“Charge modulation in two-dimensional compounds”, Pierre Monceau (CNRS and University Grenoble-Alpes)

Although the first measurements demonstrating charge modulation were performed forty years ago, many open questions are now the matter of intense researches.

In the first part, I will review some recent results obtained on transition dichalcogenides (MX2) compounds such as : mechanism of the Peierls transition,  effect of strong electron-phonon coupling, soft mode in the phonon dispersion, ground state in a single layer…..

Then I will describe some of the properties of a new family of 2D compounds, namely rare earth tritellurides, in which the size of the rare earth determine the charge density wave transition temperature.
